Well being a macro it could possibly be not as good at infinity because of the macro design. I’ve seen macros not so great at long distances in the past. Will have to see how these tests come up.
Just like the CV 65/2 APO Macro, the new CV 110 has a floating group (actually a 3-group floating mechanism) which should ensure high resolution at infinity and MFD. So, in theory it should perform great at all distances. We'll see.
Many lenses have floating elements, including newer Macro lenses, but don't perform at the same level at the near/far distances. Since getting my great copy of the Sony 90 I convinced myself that I don't need the 110. I guess if it were the 65 in a 110 focal length I might be tempted. Especially if the matched IQ of the 90 at macro but had better infinity performance. Not an easy task.
This is true, but we've been spoiled by the CV 65/2 APO's performance at all distances. (It's not a 1:1 macro lens tough)
Only the Batis 135/2.8 APO performs similarly at infinity distance.
As my initial testing shows, the new 110/2.5 seems to be optimal at closer distances. I will test it more today.
I also tested the 65/2 APO + (Marumi 5+) achromat and was surprised by how similar they performed at f/4 and MFD. (Both 1:1 MACRO). Of course the working distance it bigger with the 110.
Well, my 135/1.8 Sigma supposedly arrives today, so that may be my infinity ~135mm lens for landscapes - we'll see.
Hopefully the 110/2.5 is sharp enough at infinity accross the frame to make it worthwhile. I can forgive a little bit of non-tack sharpness if contrast, flare/ghosting, and great sun stars are the result.
My 90/3.5 SL-II is kind of that way - excellent up close and looses just a tad at infinity at 42.5MP, but it's equally sharp across the frame at infinity, so is good for landscapes.
I'll just say, having recently dragged my newish Batis 135 to Southern Utah for landscapes, this lens is the bees knees for landscape teles. I have zero regrets not having waited for the 110 CV - even as a CV 65 lover.
Agreed aside from sunstarts. The Batis 135 is amazing throughout the focal range.
