Re: Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM lens Image Thread

So I did a PR gig today a awards function and usually I shoot people chatting to each other in small groups like 2 to 5 people. So a great chance to shoot the Sony 24 in normal mode and also in crop mode. Well it worked perfectly focused essential the same in AFC and Eye AF. So I put the crop or APSC as a custom function on the focus hold button ( button on lens) and man is this awesome to work like this as my left hand is there anyway and I don’t have to take my right thumb off my back focus button or EYE AF button. I still have the crop function on C4 but you gotta reach for it which sometimes can be a pain but anyway the switch between crop and full frame is quite nice and smooth in operation. The only real downside is your shooting 18 max in crop but for work like this I don’t need more than 18mpx.

So let me continue on how I deal with the mix of 42 and 18 max in C1 . So since these are PR shots in post on output I’m doing JPEG, SRGB and than I set a fixed width of 12 inches at 300 dpi. Now not matter what it will always go to that dimension I set , so when I’m done processing I don’t know if it was 42 or 18 as the files sizes are identical and honestly what I want to deliver to client. They don’t need to know what your doing here.

The only negative I see is when in C1 looking at the lens data it always says 24mm regardless if I’m in crop or not. So how do I know and you may have this in LR as well but in my processing summary if I select a 18 max file in for example a full Tif file the 18 mpx file will be 54 mb and the full frame will be 112. Does this really matter maybe not but kind of nice to know especially when your trying this out when testing or after your done shooting.

One other trick not so much with this lens but working in crop mode I can increase the resolution back up in C1 and I found 50 percent more pretty safe if you want a bigger end file. So you can stretch or creatively cheat a little.

Finally with this I decided to bail on the Batis 40 as I really don’t need it for this work. So if your sporting a 24, 50/55 and 85 and willing to work in crop mode when needed or to eliminate another lens than it’s kind of a nice option to have so my 24 is 24/36 and my 55 is 55/82 and my 85 is 85/127.

Btw was using my Godox 860 and it corrected any diffrence in aperture Change going from 24 to 36
