I took two walks in the last 2 days with Z7, 35mm S f1.8, 24-70 S f/4 and also 70-200 f/4 with FTZ.
The photos were taken all with Auto1 white balance and matrix metering, IBIS is on, on the first day I used also a tripod especially when I compared the 35mm to the 24-70, all other are handheld.
I shot in RAW and converted then with ViewNX-i without any changes, not even crop or leveling. On 4-5 pictures I changed exposure because, mainly when I shot into sun or forgot to reset exposure compensation.
The pictures are on https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-2J2LqG
How does the 70-200 f4 perform on the Z7?
The 70-200f4 perform great in AF-S and AF-C single however if I choose AF-C wide or small area, it has tendency lock to background. I seldom have this issue with D850, though there is no Wide/small area mode for it but in auto area mode with face detection, D850 almost never fail.
Z7 may not perform the best for wheel chair spec readers. However it slowly climbs up the ladder for me from initial B~B+ rating to a A after each trip and continuing using and customizing it, I would give it the same solid score as D850. No, D850 is still more versatile tool that suit for everything you throw on it. However, you should not ignore Z7’s merits over it such as: size and weight, light and high performance zoom and future S glass, very silent shutter, you can handhold it get better sharpness images, all advantage of EVF shooting without problems other system I had (I am a hardcore OVF fan), video and IBIS. Adapting pretty much any glasses…..
I enjoy using it very much even with a few problems that I hope Nikon are not purposely crimp it. Such as no focus confirmation for AIS, ZF.2 or any manual lens, no aperture linkage for AIS lens so no EXIF, No option for auto aperture and stop down shooting until f5.6, (it would be nice to change f5.6 to f2.8 or have option to shooting WO), no control ring for FTZ adapter, FTZ adapter interfere Arca type plate, no multiple shot raw output like D850, no AF mode change on fly (for D850, I can use AFON to bring auto area or 3D tracking instantly, for no reason Z7 remove this option) etc….
However, even with these, It is THE best MILC under current market for me, it is largely a small D850 for my use.
I don’t visit Nikon forum daily and created here in Alt forum
The thread has different priority than Nikon forum here and it is more alt people oriented. If you are interested, you can drop in and share some love and joy EVEN with native Nikon Lenses. I look forward to receive my Leica M adapter for Z7. With 1.1mm sensor stack and 45M iso64, this is an ultimate image making machine.

Gorgeous shots!
And I agree with your thoughts. For paid shoots, I always bring 2-3 bodies, and it'd be nice to have the Z7 as my backup without taking up too much space and essentially have no compromise in image quality vs my D850s. I occasionally do set photography with video/sound rolling as I shoot stills, and the silent shutter on the Z7 is going to be a great tool for that. The fact that I can essentially just buy the body, and use all of my nikon lenses with little compromise in terms of AF performance makes it a no brainer to me. Also from a post-processing standpoint, I know that (in theory) I can load up a thousand Z7 images along with a thousand D850 images, and assuming all my settings and environment is the same, I can post-process them in batches in the same way - which is a time saver versus trying to match up colors and such with another brand that has orange spray tan skintones
I am eagerly waiting for specs on the vertical grip - hoping the initial rumors about it not having controls are simply just uninformed reactions to the non-functional mockup at the release event, as it'd make absolutely no sense to me to have a vertical grip that simply just has more batteries in it and no shutter button, af joystick and dials.
I feel you don't need silent shutter for Z7, with EFCS, it is so quiet that it may meet most of events need quietness. If you do enable silent shutter for Z7, the read out speed is only 1/15s and with delay for next shot.
With latest Adobe update, Z7 file is as delicious as D850s'.
I am pretty sure grip will be a battery extension only, there is no electronic contact on Z7. It is not a problem for me but I agree it will be an issue for many.
Ah I didn't know about the slow readout speed and delay. I agree the EFCS is pretty quiet on the Z7.
So being that you have a Z7 in hand, would you mind checking if there are any contacts in the battery bay like the Sony A7 bodies do for the vertical grip? I know the Z7 doesn't have an electronic connection on the bottom of the camera (like the EOS R) but I'm hoping they built the contacts in the battery bay..
