In Florida when you get old you get
Medical Marijuana in your smoothies

Recreational marijuana is now "legal" in California and communities in Marin County are deliberating how they will approve retail outlets to deliver the goods. Unless the Justice Department under Jeff Sessions follows through on its threats to intervene where states have authorized recreational marijuana, we'll likely be enjoying the weed much as the residents of Colorado and Washington are. As with "demon rum" I believe the time has come to end "reefer madness" in the form of jail sentences for having a toke or two. But I doubt my smoothies will ever be the delivery mechanism. And, truth be told, I'd still likely prefer a good single malt scotch whisky than a toke or two...

Since I can't drink anymore, I'd LOVE it if Virginia legalized it! Might have to move to CA. D

Or we can send a care package...

We could label it "Nikon Lens..."

I haven't had any alcohol in six months and have a sense I'll continue not drinking. My brother stopped drinking in his mid-seventies after a lifetime of enjoying his schnapps. Alcohol as I've perhaps mentioned on this thread is a "gateway" drug for me when it comes to eating. When I'm sipping something... beer, wine, whisky... I often have my hand in a cellophane bag with either popcorn or corn ships or on occasion even potato chips. Since I don't work twelve hours in the field, the calories from that bag end up around my middle. My move to a vegan diet coupled with no drinking has yielded about a 17 pound weight loss this summer, for which I'm grateful. When I'm hiking up and down hills it is helpful to remember without weight loss, I'm carrying the equivalent of an extra bowling ball for each 15 pounds I carry. At my highest weight, which was five years before I started this thread, I weighed 260 pounds. I now weigh 183. That's a lot of bowling balls! And, in fact, my weight loss from that plateau came about through hiking the hills of Marin, so at one time I was carrying that much weight.

From what I've read, the weight at which I move from "overweight" to normal weight is 164 pounds, so I'm certainly not there yet. But because I know that it is difficult for me to practice moderation when I'm imbibing my favorite spirits, it makes sense simply to stop. The test will be this winter since it has always been the winter months when a wee dram feels most appealing. Perhaps this winter it will be a hot cup of chai... I'll let you know how it goes.

WOW! That's a lot of weight loss, congrats! It's funny, I don't miss drinking at all. I found a non-alcoholic beer called Bucklers (bottled by Heineken) that tastes great. It was the taste that I liked more than the effect.

I tried non-alcoholic beer some years ago and was pleasantly surprised by a couple of them. I landed on something called Gerselbrau then available through Trader Joe's. But living in Marin County, I'm surrounded by the most amazing craft beer producers that eventually I became lost in the world of Lagunitas... Gnarlywine, Maximus, Imperial Stout, Cappuccino Stout; or at the local brewpub a short walk from where I live, Iron Springs with their amazing collection of great beers. That said, however, it was really my affection for single malt scotch whisky that did me in. And I would say the same thing... I enjoyed the taste of Islay scotches. Those are not cheap brews, however, which did dampen my enthusiasm quite a bit. The best price I could get for a fifth of 16 year old Lagavulin was $65 plus shipping since the best price is a shop in San Francisco. If I bought locally the price would be closer to $80 a bottle. I went through one year when I bought hundreds of dollars of different single malts, just to experiment. Needless to say, that was a period of time when I WASN'T buying Nikon lenses...

Now I'm not buying booze OR Nikon lenses, which means my bank account is growing...

Perhaps trying a non-alcoholic beer this winter would satisfy me, though I would be nervous that having the taste in my mouth might open the door to the real stuff. I intend not adding weight this winter. In fact, I expect I'll be getting closer to the 164 goal weight... though for vanity I might want to get down below 160 so I'd have experienced a hundred pound weight loss. Of course, this is much more about health that vanity. My doctor had encouraged me NOT to lose more weight when I hit 170 in 2006. He needn't have worried since that winter I put back 26 pounds. Those 26 pounds have been hanging around my middle for 12 years... not a healthy situation at all. Eventually our body demands its due. Ignore our body's needs and there is always a price to pay. So far, I've not had dramatic consequences from being overweight. I'd like to avoid them if at all possible. I know I won't get out of here alive, but I'd like to minimize the pain and trauma along the way...

I wish us all well in that regard.

In the non-alcohol beer category I really like Clausthaler Golden Amber and Erdinger.

G

I'll see if I can locate those around here.

I don't know Leighton... you've been lifting a bottle produced by Heineken for so long you may not be capable of actually tasting what is in the bottle from another producer...

I vaguely recall trying both of those beers as well. The Clausthaler was pretty good. But at the time price was material to my decision and the Gerstlebrau was cheaper...

Here's a ranking of non-alcoholic beers... for better or worse.

You're right, I'd have a hard time changing. I see Buckler is rated 2nd, no wonder, it's a good "beer". I have had the Beck's, it's good too, but it's 2 dollars more a six pack and I'm cheap.

You think I didn't know that?

I discovered that Trader Joe's carries a brand of single malt scotch from the Islay region I love so much that they sell for UNDER $20 called Finlaggan. Lagavulin it is not BUT for the price it gets me what I need WHEN I need it. It is a very good dram. Here are some tasting notes for anyone who cares...

Cheap is good especially when it IS good...
