I think he is pointing that the darkest point is hardly pitch black (see below "no clipping"). Even if the shot is very underexposed (see "missed ETTR"). This needs some processing. But actually, with this lens, you'll have more details in the shadows too (see "blacks"). The same is with the very whites (see "whites"). Both are very useful to create contrasty scenes or handle higher dynamic ranges (recover shadows/brights). It's one of the things I really like about this lens. Especially for foliage/skies in landscapes.
