All I can say is my FE 100-400/4.5-5.6 GM OSS, including the 2 FE TCs, are excellent for birding on the A9 all the way to f/11, using the electronic shutter. Its performance at 400mm matters most to me.
I am using mostly the above combination or the Olympus E-M1.2 with the 300/4.0 Pro and 1.4x TC.
So the Sony system gives a max reach of 400, 560, and 800mm.
The Olympus system a 135 film equivalent reach of 600 and 840mm.
Both systems capable of excellent results.
