I have to respectfully disagree. I always use lens hoods when I shoot outdoors to prevent lens flare. I'm not particularly a fan of this look, but some photographers are. It's not necessary indoors, but it aids in protection if you happen to drop it. This has happened to me in the past, and it's a small cost to replace the hood, saved my $1600 lens. By the way, hoods are not free with new lenses. They come included with all lenses, which in included in the price. Take telephoto lenses for example, replacements hoods can exceed $600.
