Last of the real Gunfighters Hellenique AirForce F4E leaving Fairford 2017

Wonder and most memorial image for me Jan. This jet, both pre gun and post gun placement, covered my "six", and those of all soldiers, in Vietnam for my 2 combat tours and did it well. I had the extreme pleasure of meeting 4 POW's ,3 flew F4's and 1 was the first Hanoi Hilton POW- E. Alvarez I wish we had the A10 Warthog available then to help. Hell hath no fury like the A10. "Puff The Magic Dragon gunship" came close but was an easy target.
Crisp, sharp photo and glad to see the F4 still flying.
Dan

I know these are lousy images taken from 50 years ago on slides but just posted for FYI. The POW's were from 2015.

Cool to see some photo's from that era and the POW's, and thank you for your service Dan.
Yeah they thought a gun wasn't necessary in those days but after numerous failures of then new sidewinders they made the decision to ad a gun but I think the Marines experimented with gun pod's under the wing.
That would be something if they had the A10 in those days but i think the Sandy's also packed a big punch back in the day.
In what unit did you served your two combat tours if I may ask.

Great to hear that you have great memories of the Phantom.
If I'm correct the Greeks already phased them out last year or are going to the coming year the only one's left are the Japanese air force.

One of the members here Kevin Jackson who every now and then posts here, did a tour a couple of month's back and made some great photo's don't know for sure if posted some of them...

Hope you have a great Christmas Dan...
