I clean my 1Dx (used 12 / 14 swabs in 4 years) and now 1Dx2 regularly with the Eclipse fluid and swab (put them in the gear bag when long travel), practically there is no issue on affecting my photography. I know I need to spend time to clean the sensor but actually not frequent, the effort spend on it is far less then doing the post processing the raw file
I know the more oil speck or dust on the sensor is not perfect but I found no sensor can guarantee no dust no debris so more or less I still need the cleaning stuff ready anytime.
Do you find the shots above from PV normal?
Sensor cleaning is fine for some people who want to risk it. I don't want to take chances with a camera of this calibre and clean my sensor. I used to have Vistek here in Calgary clean my equipment until their tech scratched my 1DX2 sensor, which resulted in a $1700 CAD bill, and that included the 30% CPS Platinum discount. Now I exclusively send everything to Canon, who thankfully is pretty quick with returns.
Look, it's not that I don't realize that cleaning is part of the game with these cameras; I've been shooting for enough years and own enough cameras that I know it's a facet of life. Making an excuse for this camera model's atrocious maintenance routine seems completely asinine to me, however. No other camera Canon makes requires maintenance to this degree and this regularly.
Nikon recalled their D600 for oil problems, and from the shots I've seen from those cameras they weren't any worse than what we're experiencing; in fact, our cameras are worse. Check out the link I posted a few pages back on someone detailing their D600 oil woes.
People are so funny about this. It's like people buying Ducati motorcycles -- they pay high prices and justify their ridiculous maintenance schedules and mechanical problems on the fact their bikes are 'high performance' and 'Italian', or something equally as stupid. The fact is, they just don't make a reliable bike.
The fact is, Canon just does not make a reliable 1D currently.
