Jim. Hope you don't mind me jumping in here since I use Luminar a lot. I've been using Aurora since it's first version and Luminar since it came out too (plus the Creative Suite of course) and they've superceded most other software I use for the most part.
I love the many pre-sets and have indeed created many more of my own. Most I doubt I would ever use but they give me ideas on how to process a shot, in fact often I see 2 or 3 styles I'd like to process the same shot in. They are however always just a starting point (and of course no pre-sets are applied on ingress so you can start from your 'base' RAW too).
One interesting ability of the pre-sets (as opposed to those in say LR which I still have and use for all my logo & copyright insertions) is that you can decide on the opacity (or percentage) of the pre-set to apply, so if you like the pre-set but feel it over cooks it slightly then just use the slider in the pre-set box to reduce it's effect).
Of course in Luminar you have many different adjustment 'sliders' too ( I haven't counted but maybe 40-50 and each one can be used in a variety of ways) and can apply these how you see fit, I like that they give descriptions and show examples of what each slider can do and that you can actually apply different pre-sets to different sections of the shot, using layers, if you wish and export it to other Creative Suite programs and back again.
Check out my Instagram feed #thedragonsfather (I apologise for the plug !) as 90% of those shots were processed in Luminar (the other 10% in Aurora HDR).
