It is weird, I would have expected performance similar to the 5DIV too, if not quite as good. Hopefully it is just an artefact of the preproduction camera, but we'll see.
Rob mentioned earlier in the thread that the camera came in a retail box with manual etc. The box had a sticker with "Sample" on it, but not "Pre-production". To call it a pre-production camera at this point sounds like wishful thinking, although admittedly it is not impossible.
I agree, there is no way this isn't the actual sensor. I prototype with a different sensor would never end up in any sort of box and would have been decided on months or even a year ago. It could be running early FW but the sensor isn't going to change.
I am really surprised as it was almost a given that it would have the DR improvements from the new fabs just like all the new cameras do. I guess nothing is ever for certain....hopefully 5DSR2 and 7D3 don't follow this trend.....
