We forewent base camp because you can barely see Everest from there. Kalla Patthar is going a bit higher, 5700 meters, but gives a great view of the entire range. Most groups go at sunrise, but this would put the sun behind Everest. We went for sunset and had a nice array of clouds.
Yes there is earthquake damage to a greater or lesser extent all throughout the trip. Honestly its most obvious back in Kathmandu where entire temples are leveled. I also saw a lot of rebuilding, this time with rebar. These are both from Kathmandu:
Also the farther up the trail you go, the fewer buildings there are. Wooden ones seemed to have fared well. We saw quite a few stone and mortar ones that had been abandoned.
