Thank you very much, Michael! With the lag of our mirrorless system in general and the A7r II in particular, it was more luck than anything else. I was aware of that and pulled the trigger shortly before the seagull was about to pass in front of that opening.... fortunately.
Here are two additional images from that special rock at Pfeiffer Beach... The first one was captured from the side to accentuate the light beam and the second a little bit later on that day when the sun was even lower. Smooth Reflection App was used for the second one.
