From my last trip to a savannah preserve.
Auto ISO at a minimum 1/320s shutter speed, hand held or with a BushHawk + VR, worked most of time for me.

D7200 + TC14EII (= 280-700/8) @ 450mm, ISO 320, f/9 at 1/320s VR on, hand held. 39% cropped (6/15.4Mp)or in fact 6/24Mp = 25% cropped.
