 D810 D750 D610 for the average human, my silly comparison summary | |
Tax refunds coming in, and I had two friends asking me which full frame body to get. They are upgrading from crop. I wanted to share my notes, here, on the www.
I\'m not saying I have it all figured out, b/c I don\'t. But here are my thoughts anyhow.

If you are in the market for a FF body, and you are new to Nikon, or moving up from a crop, do yourself a favor and go to the local store who stocks these cameras.
And. Play. With. Them.
It\'s just money, get the most expensive.
NO. They are very different.
Even if the D750 and D810 were the same price, you may choose a D750.
It all depends on what\'s important to you. and how it feels in your hands.
Do not rely on just reading blogs/forums and looking at pictures.
They are very unique beasts.
With that being said, there are details that the average human should know. I will attempt to highlight them properly below, and will add just a few of my personal opinions below. Cheers!
Cliff Notes:
these are all FF (full frame) bodies
If you\'re on a budget and/or just diving into DSLR or FF photography, you\'re considering the D610 & D750.
A clean, gently used D610 could be had for around $950 to $1,000.
A used D750 would be around $1500.
A new D750 will be twice the price of a used D610.
*D610 does everything well enough for portraits, landscape, family stuff, and with the right setup and knowledge, sports. The IQ is fantastic.
If you are on a budget and won\'t look back, get the D610 - it\'s super cheap right now!

*D750 better AF. better than the other two at low light. better screen than D610. it\'s the only one with flip screen or wifi.
The D750 can do anything.
If you have the money, to jump from 610 to 750, but don\'t print incredibly large images, you can probably skip the D810.
If you shoot JPEG (which you probably don\'t and shouldn\'t) and/or you only perform \"light\" post processing using LR basic sliders, the D750 is probably perfect for you! It\'s a GREAT all-arounder!

*D810 way too many mega-pickles for the avg person. incredible IQ.
No wifi. No flip screen. Probably best suited for studio work and landscape, but can do anything!
It\'s the only one to employ 1/8000th shutter speed, which is super fast and helpful if you shoot at f/1.4 1.8 a lot in daylight.
If you prefer RAW and dig deep into post processing, the D810 could be the best tool for you!
It\'s intended to be the King. Not a subjective thing, it\'s science.
It doesn\'t have an anti-aliasing filter over the sensor, while the Nikon D750 and D610 do – this allows the Nikon D810 to create images with greater ultra-fine detail.

The D610 and D750 both have very good IQ, Dynamic Range, and Color Depth. Not just b/c they are FF (full frame), they are both very good cameras. They are no slouches!
Specifics:
D610:
-probably does everything well enough to do the job. And it\'s so cheap right now!
-it\'s light. and not huge.
-if you\'re on a budget, and this is your first FX purchase, go for it.
-dual card slots, both sd
D750:
-a step up. and while it\'s not exactly cheap, it\'s considerably < a D810.
-far more innovative/modern than a D610 and has a newer sensor.
-it\'s light. and not huge.
-if you use BBF (back button focus), you\'ll have to program the AE-L button to be your AF-on button. same as d610.
-you can program the red video button on the top, to be your ISO button (which is what I\'ve done with the D810 as well). can\'t do this with the d610.
-not the pro button layout you may be used to if you are coming from a D700/800/810 (@ChrisCourt)
-significantly less $ and weight when compared with 810. It\'s amazing how much lighter the D750 really is.
-on board wifi, and ability to use the ios app... it\'s clean, it\'s simple, it just works.
not a gimmick. you can be on-site on a beach or in the woods, with a client, and literally text them a teaser image in less than 5 minutes. (D810 doesn\'t have this)
-better in low light -3 for D750 vs -2 ev for D810. low light, this camera is amazing, even at the pixel peeping level
-better at high ISO than the D810 and of course the D610
-shutter sound isn\'t as special as the d810
-shutter sound is a lot louder!
-1/4000th shutter speed and not 1/8000 like the D810
-iso 100 and not iso 64 like the D810
-dual card slots, both SD
-depth of the grip, the grip itself seems to get much love (especially from @pr4photos)
-better metering system than the D610 and a better AF system than the D810 (@elisha82)
-AF speed and sensitivity: D750 > D810 (@jarek0423)
-far better screen when compared with the D610, 1229k dots (D810 D750) vs. 921k (D610)
-the screen tilts up or down, which is awesome for weddings and shooting kids or pets. you will use it more than you think, even for stills, but especially if you shoot video.
-having a quick U1 and U2 custom settings on the dial is very nice (as @Mr Joe points out)
-because it\'s lighter, easier to hand hold and get more keepers, than a d810, for an average human.
-flash sync speed 1/200, not as good as the D810
-both the d750 and d810 feature a Multi-CAM 3500 FX sensor, which features 51 autofocus points (d610 has 39), of which 15 are ultra-sensitive cross type (d610 has 9)
-highest FPS of all three bodies
-marginally smaller than d610 141×113×78 mm vs 141×113×82 mm
-you could buy a D750 and 3 nice used 1.8G lenses with the savings (when compared with a D810)
D810:
SEX.
I probably don\'t need to tell you how good the images are from this camera.
Probably the best DSLR ever made.
-a lot more $, a good bit larger, and a lot heavier, when compared with D750
-you don\'t realize how much bigger and heavier it is, until they are both there in front of you.
-pro layout for the buttons. including separate AE and AF buttons (@jarek0423)
-AF points spread out slightly more, when compared with D750 (@jarek0423)
-faster buffer than D750, and it\'s noticeable.
-viewfinder is pentaprism with improved coatings. D750 doesn\'t have the improved coatings.
-viewfinder eyepiece is larger and has shutter blind, better if you wear glasses! this is really cool and is missed when I shoot with D750/610
-screen dots 1229k, same as D750
-screen cover (don\'t get one with the D750, which tilts)
-quieter shutter! really noticeable at a wedding!
-1/8000 shutter speed, nice if you shoot at f1.4 during the day
-flash sync speed 1/320 (better than D750, doesn\'t matter if you never use off camera flash)
-dual card slots, 1 each cf and sd
-same cross points and af points as D750 (good)
-slightly better color depth and IQ than the D750 and of course the D610
-WAY more mega-pickles 36.2 vs 24.3 D750
There are other differences/advantages that I won\'t get into.
You probably don\'t need a D810.
All three of these bodies use the same exact battery EN-EL15.
Real Thoughts on the D750 vs D810:
Are you in advertising or commercial photography and need the ability to print at super huge sizes?
The D810, with it\'s massive 36.2mp may actually be necessary for you.
36 - 24 mp differential is HUGE!
IN REAL LIFE, all those mega-pickles are also useful for cropping images for better composition.
-> so you could shoot with a 50mm, and go home and crop the heck out of your images, to the point it almost looks like you shot with an 85 or even 135, and NOT lose much (if any) IQ, depending on how large you print.
If you had the D750 and the D810, you\'ll probably grab the D750 more b/c it\'s lighter, it has the wifi and flip screen, and the IQ is so close. You may miss the 1/8000th and the greater ability to crop images and/or print larger.
If you had the D750 and the D810, and you grab the D810.... you won\'t be thinking, man, wish I had the D750 on me b/c it has so much better ability in low light, and so much better AF. It\'s true that the D750 is ever-so-slightly better in those areas, but it\'s not enough that you would really miss it. You may just miss the flip screen, maybe the wifi, and maybe the lighter body.
Having 2 Good FF Bodies:
If you get paid to shoot events, you need/want two bodies.
D810/D750 will be my combo, once I sell my D610.
However!!! It may be BETTER for me/you if the tools (buttons) were identical. So that you\'re more comfortable using them, whether it\'s together (dual wielding) or not.
Looking back, I may have gone D750/D750 if I hadn\'t purchased the D810 first. But at this stage, I will have two different tools in my bag. I can decide which one is better suited for what I\'m doing.

The D500 is coming out now. And while it does at lot of the same things as the D750, and has excellent IQ, it\'s not full frame. However, you may want to do some research on the D500.
