Mark, I\'m absolutely no expert in this field, so I can only tell you this from my own experience this week: I used the 100-400 + 1.4 TC on the 7DII on a couple of occasions, but not too much. Maybe 1 or 2 shots in the images above.
For mammals it\'s a lot of reach; probably way too much (most animals allow you to get quite close in the Mara since it\'s a reserve with a relative high number of visitors, so animals are somewhat used to people I guess). If you shoot birds then different rules apply probably.
A 500 fixed would actually in a lot of cases be too close.
