Re: The 58mm F/1.4G Thread

so i\'m obviously going to have to re adjust the AF Fine tune on this lens. After the repair performed at APS its not as good as it was. before even after numerous drops, the lens was tack sharp. I told them to perform any repairs from damage they may have seen and they said there wasnt much and just adjusted the CLOSE FOCUS of the lens. should have just told them to leave it alone.

Maybe the D800 also getting a new lens mount is throwing it off. I adjusted this lens on a tripod at a focus chart using the DOT TUNE focus method and live view. i didnt like doing the test at the suggested distance, it was too far away so i adjusted the fine tune with the lens at the closer distances i normally use it with kids which is about 3 -4 feet. it passed dot tune just fine and looked sharp in camera.

when i use it on people focusing on the eye at the same distances, the focus is just soft overall. ill have to readjust it with people next time but im thinking no matter what its just going to be soft at close distances and it bothers me because i had a copy that was sharp at close distances which isnt the norm i know but it was nice.

Heres a shot and i fully expect the camera left eye to be OOF since the head is turned but that camera right eye is just too soft for me even at this distance.
