I can ! Lots of sympathy, and total awe, at those porters that carry 40 kgs for 5+ hours up the mountain for 50rmb (ca. US$8, US$5 for the return) twice a day.
I messed up both my knees and an ankle in Iceland last Summer - leading to 4 months virtually stuck on the upper floor of my home unable to walk ! This was a clear test for those poor knees though - but the excellent Cho Pat braces I wore, and my Black Diamond hiking poles, meant I felt hardly a twinge. Even after those 1,081 consecutive steps up to Feilaishi and then of course 1,081 back down again
