I have been involved with photography for almost sixty years, and have used many cameras and formats over that time. (Probably the biggest mistake was Polaroid - three years of images, faded away to nothing...) I have concluded that the commonly expressed sentiment that \"You can\'t improve your photography by buying new gear\" is about 75-80% true. The remaining 20-25% are those situations in which new gear can either make doing what you feel you need to do easier, stretch yourself into something you have never done before, or both. Three examples over the last four or five years: (1) A very bad back forced me into mirrorless gear just to continue, when I could no longer carry 1D bodies and L glass. (2) Buying a used RX1 got me back into full frame and showed me how great IQ really can be. (3) Realizing that spending too much time stitching 35mm images with mixed success was not a viable substitute for a top quality ultra-wide lens led me to buy a used a7r and a 16-35 f/4 EF lens as a companion to the RX1. I may or may not be a better photographer now, but I am a happier one
