Seeing lots of differing reports. Makes me wonder whether copy variation might be at play here. Copy variation could be with the particular camera, adapter and/or lens used in a given test.

Besides \"copy variation,\" there are potentially other factors, too.

1. Operator technique — subject and lighting variations, etc.

2. Confirmation bias — in both directions.

I\'d say those two, along with \"expectations,\" are much more important than \"copy variation\" in this situation.

Indeed. And \"expectations\" and their effect on how we evaluate things are at least related to what I\'m thinking of when I include \"confirmation bias,\" as defined at the link. We are all subject to its effects, and they can color our expectations and how we see and evaluate the way a thing actually works. (This is not at all limited to one brand, though the effects are frequently manifested in \"interesting\" ways among photographers of all stripes. ;-)

What you are describing about the camera not knowing which direction to go is true for Contrast Detect AF. As you said CDAF can be made faster given enough compute power and many crop mirrorless cameras now have very fast CDAF in single shot mode.Though it is harder in continuous and video AF.

However it is not just about the direction of AF. PDAF also tells the camera how much the lens needs to move to achieve focus...

Thanks for that explanation. That is, indeed, the difference that I recall reading about.
