I\'d take that one over Ebay any day.

$1179 is what Nikon sells them for refurbished after the 15% discount, plus from Nikon you don\'t have gift payment nonsense and you get a warranty. I\'ll likely just buy one from Nikon.

This one sold for $1088. http://m.ebay.com/itm/231589752808?nav=SEARCH
Non refurbished with retail box(better for resale). No gift payment nonsense. The seller has to pay 13% in fees.

So the going rate is in the $1000-$1100 range or refurbished from Nikon with warranty for $1179. I\'ll find one. Thanks for the suggestions. By the way did you guys know that it\'s considered a lowball to offer someone the going rate for a product. I was notified of this by a seller on the buy and sell after they contacted me. Comical.

Anyway sorry to derail. Back to the images Elijah... Have anything

It sounds like you have your mind set on a price, which is fine, but as a counterpoint, I think your \"going rate\" is not in line with common parlance on FM, so for the sake of discussion and to speak up for the sense of FM community that (mostly) exists on these forums....

1) Average selling price on FM is more relevant to FM sellers than by using other sites, not sure this really is worth arguing over, as you also seem to realize the dubious nature of ebay purchases already, but most people are willing to pay a premium from FM sellers with good feedback.

2) Nikon refurb \"warranty\" is 90 days and I haven\'t found a state that Nikon doesn\'t charge sales tax in, and you have shipping costs correct, as well as the fact that the 15% is not going on right now? So, if you are comparing pricing but not the actual current days cost after shipping/tax etc., then some people may see that as a lowball, I don\'t think that is comical. I don\'t have time to add to my cart and check out out the door pricing today at Nikon, but I\'d imagine the current (i.e. \"going price\") is well over your 1179 once delivered.

3) Ebay \"going rate\" is arguable perhaps, but I\'d say \"going rate\" should be what you can get it for now with a buy it now for a similar item, such as something well described by a selling with similar feedback and with similar detail in photos. Typically from FM the lenses are US model so that would have to be factored in as well. Therefore, going rate on ebay would be about $1518 shipped which still may or may not be a grey market. I don\'t see any US market lenses buy it now for anything close to even $1300.
Even using the sold listings looking at the sold listings for US (non grey market lenses) the prices averaging are over $1200 with shipping. Which is ok if you don\'t mind that many are \"This item may be a floor model or store return that has been used.\" But again, obviously you do have doubts towards, otherwise you would have went that route already.

4) Seller take home money after fees is also irrelevant, because it will sell for the average selling price on FM in due time. If someone wants a \"deal\" they will have to bide their time and wait for a posting that is underpriced by FM standards which generally sell for asking quite fast.

5) So in conclusion, being called a lowballer depends on tone of the message and whether you are using current pricing rather than historical pricing that may or may not occur again in the future. Its fine to make lowball offers but to post that it is comical to be called out seems to me to make light of the FM community here for which we are all part of. YMMV

Hey if an item sits unsold for over a week and you counter offer a difference of $100 which brings the price inline with past sales on all of ebay and similar found past sales on FM and other locations then I would assume that to be a fair offer. If that is considered a lowball offer and I am given shit for it in return then please don\'t contact me. It\'s that simple. I think we can all agree that refurbished items in non retail packaging generally bring in less than their retail packaged counterparts(right or wrong it is true). Also I think and I don\'t care if I am in the minority but asking for a gift payment is total bullshit. Not only is it against PayPal policy but it removes protections for the buyer. I\'ve been guilty of asking for gift payments in the past myself and I never felt quite comfortable with it so as of recently I\'ve changed my own policy regarding such practices. I\'m willing to pay a fair price but I expect fair conduct in return. My offer was $1100 by the way. I hardly find that out of line. I will also pay $1200 for a retail packaged 58 1.4G again I hardly find that out of line, and if you check the last few that sold here, a few sold for $1200. I think I am fair. Feel free to disagree.
