It makes ZERO sense to have in-camera crop modes in the first place if you don\'t get anything from it.... Might as well shoot FF and crop in post.... WTF, Canon.... I want to hear a technical reason why you could no do this....
They told me that the crop mode takes more processing power. Please note that you get a full resolution raw file even in crop mode and that the crop is only applied to the jpeg files. So they probably empty the whole sensor for data (thus is limited to 5 fps) and then crop in post to jpeg. Not a fantastic solution, but who knows that is up with Canon these days.
As a software engineer by training I can tell you that if that\'s the way they did it, its pretty ridiculous and amateurish. I\'m sure Canon knows better...
The sensor is going to give you the data it gives you, yes, but you can choose to dump it right then and there BEFORE you process/write it into a JPG or RAW. By any sensible software design, this should result in less processor cycles, not more..... I do this all the time.... the first thing you do when your process gets a bunch of data is figure out what you really need/want and toss the rest BEFORE you do any work on the set.
