Padaung Women - Most women of this tribe, also called Kayan Lahwi, from the northern part of Myanmar wear coiled brass coils or rings around their neck. Young girls start this tradition as young as 5 years old and the coils are being added over the years. The weight of the coiled ring, which can weigh 10kg (ouch...), pushes down the collar bone and it also compresses the rib cage, creating the appearance of a \"long neck\" although the actual neck is not lengthened.
While there, a woman visitor from Spain, I believe, was trying hard to convince these tribe women to reject the practice. She tried to get her opinion across in English and she was very vocal and loud, making sure that she was heard by the \"people in charge\". But these tribe women didn\'t understand any word she was saying.... Oh, well. I would rather not go into the conversy of this practice or the tribe tradion nor do I feel like discussing this \"exploitation\" of the women there. I came, I saw and I took pictures . That\'s it!
