A few days ago I made my first trip to Benezette, PA to photograph (actually to search for and hopefully photograph) the elk. It was a very long day trip, but it was a worth while trip. I wanted to get to the area early to scout out it and hopefully locate some elk, I can happily say that if you make the trip you should have no great difficulty locating elk. Finding them in an area you can get a nice frame filling image with a good background, might be more of a problem. There is an abundance of private property that is posted with No Trespass signs which tends to make it challenging to get your frame filling images while respecting the land owner\'s rights, but it can be done! Be persistent and you will be rewarded, you will find the elk in area that you can get frame filing photographs of them... Definitely worth the trip!!! I would recommend bringing a 70-200mm lens for when you are in close proximity, and bring your long lens, you will use it!!!
Most of your opportunities to find and photograph the elk, will be in the first few hours of daylight and the few hours before sunset. All the photos posted were taken a few hours before sunset.
Start your trip with a visit to the Elk County Visitor Center.
Remember these are large wild animals, give them the space they need for their safety and yours!!!!
Wishing you great light and wonderful photography!!!!
