My considered and honest view of your alternative (a) above is that if someone decides to sink $9k on a mass produced dSLR in yr 2014, they either should have a short-term $$ return thru camera professional deployment, or they really need to give their head a vigorous shake.

Granted, if the play budget is ample, it generally matters little how people spend it, whatever makes them happy.
