Here\'s a question: Would canon use an outsourced sensor? The original 1D used a CCD from Panasonic.
Everyone has just assumed it is easy for Canon to replicate Sony\'s sensor tech, but I assume it is heavy patented. What if they decided to simply pay for the Sony sensor like Nikon, but in an official canon body, which of course would be the only option with a canon mount.

Canon has used Sony sensors for their compacts, and it\'s rumored they\'re using the 1\" Sony sensor for the new G7X. It\'s anybody\'s guess why they don\'t use them for other platforms. Perhaps it\'s because Canon wants to make use of their investment of their own fabs, although you\'d think the same argument would apply to compacts, esp. since those are higher-volume products. Perhaps it\'s due to some Canon-specific sensor features that their DIGIC image processors were designed to rely upon and it would be too costly to redesign around a different sensor (although again they use DIGIC in their compacts as well). Perhaps Canon doesn\'t feel they\'re at a competitive disadvantage using their own sensors. Perhaps it\'s just pride. Had to say.
