It is my opinion that the 5dIII + 500II is the package BIFs. One can go 500 along for its ultra speed, for both AF and shutter. One can add 1.4x III and still a very nice balanced between reach and speed.
Now with the new firmware, one can add 2xIII to further extend its reach when necessary. It works very well, far beyond my expectation.
Yes, even without new firmware, 5d3 ( and 5d2) can AF with f4 lens and stacked 1.4x converstors. But there is no comparison here, for both AF speed and accuracy.
