Zzyzx Bats

These photos were taken during Dr. Patricia Brown-Berry\'s workshop on Southwestern Desert Bats at the Desert Studies Center located at Zzyzx, California. At night, bat biologists caught bats in mist nets, checked them for condition, measured them, fed them insects, gave them water, and released them back into the night. (October 2012.)

1. A Pallid Bat (Antrozous pallidus) fresh out of a mist net.

2. Condition Check. Mature male pallid bats become more sexually developed during the fall mating season.

3. Pallid bats normally consume large insects and scorpions that they catch on the ground. This just-caught pallid bat readily consumes a katydid offered by the handler.

4. Not at all restricted to aerial locomotion, pallid bats are also agile runners and climbers. After being released onto a tree trunk, this pallid bat ran up the trunk like a squirrel. After hiding a few moments in a dense tangle of branches, it launched itself into the night.

5. A California myotis (Myotis californicus) before settling down, being measured, and feasting on crickets provided by the handler.
