I used to have the MkII TCs, and whatever lens I mounted those on, the resulting image quality was unsatisfactory. As a result, I had developed a dislike of the TC based combos which the MkIII TCs have largely reversed. The new TCs are more than an inexpensive expedient, they do retain the original lens optical performance to a large extent.
However, some MkII TC copies have also been very good, judging by some pictures I\'ve seen.
