The points are never positioned \"any better\". The AF areas of the (D)SLRs have about the same dimensions (apart from shape, oval vs diamond vs something else), because the limits are dictated by the submirror sizes.
The croppers only seem better because the viewfinder is cropped more around the AF module that has similar size to the FF one. So there. Laws of physics and the design limits force the camera designers to keep similar dimensions. The 5D2 diamond and 1Ds oval will differ, but not significantly.
