a little bird bath setup in my backyard......much less hassle and easy shooting sitting in a blind 8 ft from them birds

Blind? Hummingbirds? What for? One day I was standing next to my hummingbird feeder, in plain sight. I was taking a picture of a hummer sitting on a branch about 6\' away. I was moderately still, not perfectly still. My right elbow was 1/2\" from the feeder. At that moment, another hummer flew to the other side of the feeder, and plopped down the ring perch. This bird was 6\" from my elbow. I looked down at him from 18\" away. He looked back up at me as if to say \"so what, this is MY feeder\".

Hi Don,

Hummers here in SoCal seem fearless at times. Last summer, hose no camera in hand I was casually watering our poolside container garden, had the hose pointed up watering/playing like a kid, water arching about two feet in front of me. A fluttering by my ear and then a beautiful blue/green hummer has landed near my hand, about 5 inches from the front of the hose...drinking then bathing He repeated this a few times then flew under the hose for a full on bath...

I was still, in complete wonder, jaw on the deck I\'m guessing, truly an amazing few minutes. I kept watering, he came back, swooped under the hose for another wash, finished, paused and seem to look at me then zipped up to the top of a palm tree...as I watched him perch for a brief bit on a dying frown, he turned his head toward me and squeaked and then flew off...talk about feeling fortunate!

This is a summer photo thread so please do excuse the lack of a digital image, he\'s my internal image of those precious few hummer bathing moments in prose/poetry...

Little One, Smiling Heart

In the depths of my despair
salvation found
in tiny fluttering wings.
Not even the deafness
of a love starved world
can hold me down.
This gentle hummingbird
drinking from near my hands
has brought me back to life.
A simple gesture
of faith.
Such beauty this world.

To put a context to this poem\'s tone, this time in life was peppered with mostly bed rest, 3+ years with not much time outdoors, my life was on occasion quite dark...this little hummer bathing showed me the way out depression
