I have used both. Now i only have the 35L. It is a great lens that no one will regret buying - a versatile, workhorse that is tack sharp on all apertures, even wide open.

The 50L is a \"mixed feelings lens\". It has problems with focus shift, and compared to other L primes, it is not sharp enough wide open. You can get great shots with the 50L, but it just doesn\'t happen very often. In my experience it is very hard to nail the focus with it.

Get 35L now and 85L II later.

The 35L is my least used lens - only when I really need it since I don\'t have space for the 50. The 50L takes 40% of my photos.

Horses for courses.

Op: the simple answer is do you need 50mm or 35mm more? It\'s not like comparing the 50 1.2 with the 1.4. They are completely different lenses. Like asking if you should buy cheese or cereal - ie the wrong question to be asking and one which fundamentally doesn\'t make sense.
