Newfoundland Offerings

Hello Everyone.

I\'ve been wading through my vacation photos, and thought I would post a few. A real mixed bag of images.

1. Red Fox - Not quite the color you might expect. In Newfoundland the foxes come in three basic shades. The one here is called a Silver by the locals, because of the silver hair tips. Some are red and some a mix of red and black. This was the first picture I took in the province. I also saw an arctic fox, but was not quick enough to get a shot of it.

2. Moose - This critter is a big topic of conversation on The Rock. Introduced in the early 1900\'s, this animal has thrived. In Gros Morne National Park there are four per square kilometer. They are allowing hunting there this year.

3. Pitcher Plant - The provincial flower of Newfoundland. A widespread carnivorous plant. They actually harbor microscopic animals in the water that fills their leaves, and which only live in these plants.

4. Iceberg - Need a little ice in your Screech (dark Newfoundland rum)? This one was not post-processed so color is a bit off. More to come.

5. Sunrise Sheep - Part of a village that is supposed to replicate a Norse settlement from the viking era, and which only exists to attract tourists. A neat place none-the-less.

6. Humpback Whale - Not a great pic. Taken after the sun was down, and of course it was back lit to boot. This guy/gal was about 20 meters off the beach. Why so close? Caplan. A small fish that spawns on gravelly beaches, it comes in by the millions. Many species of whales feast on them, and are often close to shore when the fish are in spawning.

Comments welcome.
