First Impressions: TAMRON 24-70 VC (A007E) on 3rd Party Body

Received my Tamron 24-70 VC lens (Model A007E, Canon mount) on 4/26/2012 - the world first full-size, high speed standard zoom with built-in VC and moisture-resistant construction. I am posting my first impressions with some snapshots - none of them are serious work.

-- Size and handling
Although with 82mm filter size, the lens does not look too big and matches my 5D Mark III. Zoom ring is very tight. Thus, the zoom lock is not necessary. Zoom direction is different from that in Canon lenses. I do not like the shape of the hood.

[email protected] (cropped):

(Cropped, about 80%)

-- Focusing
works well on my 5D III. I did do some microadjustment after initial tests. I do not have a method to measure the focusing speed but it seems reasonable.

-- Sharpness/IQ
Overall, very impressive. Perhaps a little bit soft at 70mm f2.8 but still usable.

70mm @F2.8, 4.0, 5.6 (left to right, cropped):

70mm @F2.8, 4.0, 5.6, 8.0 (top to bottom, near center, 100% view, applied same amount of unmarked sharpenning):

-- VC or Image Stabilizer
I was often questioned by wisdoms since I purchased the EF 24-105 F/4 L IS a few years ago: Do you really need IS in this zoom range?! Yes, I do and I am aware that there is ISO settings, equipment like tripod, and IS won\'t work for moving objects, etc. However, I still find the IS/VC is very useful in many circumstances, where I have to use 1/15 sec or even lower speed. This A007E has at least 3 stops IS and I could use up to 1/6 sec with confidence.

Frankly, the VC is the most interesting feature to me. I would purchase EF 24-70 II, just for piece of mind if Tamron 24-70 did not have the VC.

70mm @1/2 sec (cropped, handheld combined with continuing shooting technique):

[email protected] (no crop):

-- Vignetting
I do not like the darker corner \"feature\", which is obvious when shooting at a garage door or wall a few feet away. I do not use a CPL and the \"feature\" remains unchanged with or without the hood.

[email protected] (no crop, resized):

Light, object distance and of course, decreasing aperture can improve the lens vignetting dramatically.

Wide end performs very well and the vignetting is much less even at f2.8.

Bokeh ([email protected], cropped. It could be better @2.8 but I do see some onion in 100%, not in all out-of-focus lights, a few only.):

For whatever it\'s worth, here is a same shoot using EF 70-300 L IS (Both of them are cropped but not identically. The exposure is also different.)

I do not like the darker corner \"feature\", which is obvious when shooting at a garage door or wall a few feet away. I do not use a CPL and the feature remains same with or without the hood.

Light, object distance and of course, decreasing aperture can improve the lens vignetting dramatically.

This A007E has at least 3 stops IS and I could use up to 1/6 sec with confidence.

works well on my 5D III.

Yes, I do and I know there is ISO settings, equipment like tripod, and not for moving objects. However, I still find the IS/VC is very useful in many circumstances, where I have to use 1/15 sec or even lower speed. This A007E has at least 3 stops IS and I could use up to 1/6 sec with confidence.

Frankly, the VC is the most interesting feature to me. I would purchase EF 24-70 II, just for piece of mind if Tamron 24-70 did not have VC.

I do not like the vignetting \"feature\", which is obvious when shooting at a garage door or wall a few feet away.

Light, object distance and of course, decreasing aperture can improve the lens vignetting dramatically:

First Impressions: TAMRON 24-70 VC (A007E) on 3rd Party Body

Received my Tamron 24-70 VC lens (Model A007E, Canon mount) on 4/26/2012 - the world first full-size, high speed standard zoom with built-in VC and moisture-resistant construction. I am posting my first impressions with some snapshots - none of them are serious work.

-- Size and handling
Although with 82mm filter size, the lens does not look too big and matches my 5D Mark III. Zoom ring is very tight, thus, the zoom lock is not necessary. Zoom direction is different from that in Canon lenses. I do not like shape of the hood.

I am posting my first impressions with some snapshots.

-- Size and handling
Size is acceptable. Zoom ring is tight and in different direction compared to Canon lenses. The zoom lock is not necessary. I do not like the hood.

[email protected] (cropped):

(Cropped, about 80%)

-- Focusing
works well on my 5D III. I do not have a method to measure the focusing speed but it seems reasonable.

F2.8, 4.0, 5.6 @70mm (from left to right):

-- VC or Image Stabilizer
I was often questioned by wisdoms since I purchased the EF 24-105 F/4 L IS a few years ago: Do you really need IS in this zoom range?! Yes, I do and I know there is ISO settings and equipment like tripod. However, I still find the IS/VC is very useful in many circumstances, where I have to use 1/15 sec or even lower speed. This A007E has at least 3 stops IS and I could use up to 1/6 sec with confidence.

70mm @1/2 sec (cropped, handheld combined with continuing shooting technique):

[email protected] (cropped):

I do not like the vignetting \"feature\", which is obvious when shooting at a garage door or wall a few feet away.
[email protected] (no crop, resized):

Light, object distance and of course, decreasing aperture can improve the lens vignetting dramatically:

Focusing on my 5D III works well, may be a little bit slower than EF lenses based on my initial tests.

First Impressions: T 24-70 VC on 3rd Party Body

Just received my Tamron 24-70 VC lens (Model A007E, Canon mount) - the world first full-size, high speed standard zoom with built-in VC and moisture-resistant construction.

Size and handling: Size is acceptable. Zoom ring is tight and in different direction compared to Canon lenses. The zoom lock is not necessary. I do not like the hood.

[email protected]:

Focusing on 5D III: Works well, seems a little bit slow than EF 24-70 based on my initial tests.

F2.8, 4.0, 5.6 @70mm (from left to right):

VC or Image Stabilizer: I was often questioned by wisdoms since I purchased the EF 24-105 F/4 L IS a few years ago: Do you really need IS in this zoom range?! Yes, I do and I know there is ISO settings and equipment like tripod. However, I still find the IS/VC is very useful in many circustances, where I have to use 1/15 sec or even lower. This A007 VC has about 3 stops IS and I could use up to 1/6 sec without issues.

70mm @1/2 sec (cropped, handheld combined with continuing shooting technique.):

[email protected] (cropped):

So far, I do not like the lens vignetting \"feature\", you can see this effects when shooting a garage door or wall in front of you:

VC or Image Stabilizer: I was often questioned by wisdoms since I purchased the EF 24-105 F/4 L IS a few years ago: Do you really need IS in this zoom range?! Perhaps, you don’t but, yes, I do. The VC/IS allows me to take sharp handheld photos at a speed up to around 1/ 8 sec, very useful in many situations. In a quick test, this A007 VC allows me to take sharp photos up to 1/15sec @70mm.

I\'ll play more with more photos. Here is my A007E.

Hood does not look good.

Focusing on 5D III: Works well with reasonable speed on initial tests.
