No offense, but I think your first photo illustrates the OP\'s heartburn with on camera fill flash. I just don\'t find it attractively lit. Compare the light of the young man sitting on the curb. To me, that looks more natural and appealing.
Your second photo lacks the harshness of the first, but it is obviously on camera flash filled.
Those are some fine looking youngsters!
