Age 7. Wanted to be a superhero. I was really into Batman and Starman comics. I bought a costume and hung it on my wall thinking that\'s what I\'m going to wear when I become one. I did pushups all the time.
Age 9. Wanted to be a pilot. I would stare at planes in the sky all the time. I think this desire was highly inspired by Baloo from Tail Spin and Launch Pad McQuack from Ducktails.
Age 14. Wanted to be a Senator. I got really into politics and read The Social Contract, The Prince, Democracy in America, The Laws. I was hoping to get into Dartmouth, Study PoliSci, join the Air Force, then run for office.
Age 16. Got my first job working for a small computer shop repairing computers.
Age 18. I wanted to be a boxer. I got really into fitness about 17. I liked this girl in fitness club and started exercising. Joined a gym and got into boxing was told I had a natural talent and extremely fast hands. Had an amateur record of 5-0 before the dream faded.
Age 19. Was working for a small computer networking company designing and implementing small office networks.
Age 20. Wanted to be a pilot. Girl I was dating didn\'t like the thought of me being a fighter. Encouraged me to pursue something else and told her I\'d like to fly. Her dad was a pilot and got me all the info needed to start flight school. Earned my solo endorsement and ran out of money due to starting college.
Age 21. Wanted to be a photojournalist. Same girl that told me to go to flight school also wanted me to go to college just because. She was studying photography and got me into it. I had always just stared at things, and often took pictures just to remember things or whenever I wanted to show someone something. I was never good at describing things, so I took pictures. She once told me about all sorts of different types of photographers. Studio photography, fashion photography, photojournalism. And I thought photojournalism was cool. It was what I was doing my whole life, telling stories through pictures except I didn\'t even know it was a thing. So I decided to get a degree in photography.
Age 22. Worked my first retail job at an educational supply store. Mostly doing inventory and cashier work.
Age 23. Worked at a summer day camp and was responsible for the 5yr olds.
Age 24. Was a Teaching Assistant and instructed Introduction to Photography and Advanced Photography classes while my professor lounged in the back if he even showed up at all.
Age 25. After graduating college I was hired as a staff photographer for a small magazine in Milwaukee, WI.
Age 26. Started working as a freelance photojournalist for two weekly newspapers in New York City.
Age 28. Started my dream job working full time as a photojournalist for The Wall Street Journal. I specialized in breaking news but did the odd real estate and feature assignment as well. Was eventually let go due to budget cuts.
Age 29. Now working occasional freelance assignments for various publications and looking to get started covering weddings.
