I really like #3, nice patterning showing on the goose, a bit of eye contact and a nice feel of depth and darker hues. Great light on the top of the wings and body, clever shot.
I see #4 two ways, very nice colors with good detail and light on the wing area and an appreciative reflection. Now, remove 1/3 of that reflection and it \'frees up\' the fluid motion of the Cormie traveling to the left, just how I see and \'feel\' it

I agree with you, No.3 is the strongest compo/background because it is staged or layered, if you will, and the bird flies right into it.
Now, I will do to the cormorant as you have suggested, and then we\'ll take another look....your idea sure sounds interesting.......a reflection drag exerted on the swimmers ?
Here are a few more colourful backgrounds. BTW, that\'s not the outline of Conrad with the lens on No.1. Could be Tony Markle perhaps ?
