holy horse hockey, Dan. talk about a worse case scenario I\'m not at all computer savvy, depending upon OSX and Sophos anti-virus; I have the latter running continuously and I\'m clean (so far). I did not get anything like the rest of you all reporting this have gotten; maybe Fred got in before I saw OP\'s post. Are you good to go now? Sure do hope so
Hi Anthony!
A little background..I was upstairs on my wife\'s Apple laptop when I saw the PM from fauxFred.
I opened the PM and clicked on the link and Apple brought up a warning stating that the website wanted to \"take control of my computer..Allow or Deny\". I denied..
I then went into Apples Safari(Snow Leopard) preferences and it displayed a cookie left by the website above. I treid to open said website and Apple Safari said no such animal so I went downstairs to my Windows XP computer that I had been working on all day.
I used Google allot today and yesterday responding to FM threads.
I then tried to go to said website and also got nowhere.
I went back upstairs for a few hours and then upon reterning to my PC found it had shut down.
I started it up and when it came time for Windows to start normally..I got the Windows message, \"Windows was not shut down correct\" Start NormallY?\" I said yes...well that is when all hell broke loose! It went into a loop...would not load normally..so I shut it down restarted and went into \"Safe\" mode. That went well..booted up correctly and asked for a restore point. I said yesterday..It did its thing and all was well but still in Safe mode...so I restarted and when it asked to start normally I said yes...It did a loop once then booted fine and I got on line.
At the same time as NAV was starting, I got an alert that it detected a \"security risk\".
I had NAV run a quick scan and it showed the above website and also that PM link. It then said it could NOT resolve the issue to call tech support.
I called NAV who stated that there were dozens of calls(India NAV tech support) from the US and the walked me through some steps that pointed to what you found. There was 2-3 lines of language that were added that on 1/30 at 4pm the computer was told to shut down and not load normally..a loop was started..
The NAV guy had me delete the 3 lines, power down, restart and voila it booted normally..
I am no where close to being computer literate so I cannot comment on any tech language.
So far it is running fine, I can power down and it restarts fine.
NAV is writing a virus alert for Google and that website as we speak.
The Apple was not affected at all....
I have really no idea what was going on with the PC looping..NAV tech support logged into my computer and did some things to the register and a few other lines of computer-eze and it is running fine..so far..
So that is that!
