Late to the party, Russ. I agree with your scorpion comment, you just need the stinger, lol.
All great captures, but if you stare at #9, you begin to realize how much confidence in their skills a gymnast must possess, and just how dangerous it becomes if they don't.
Tom: Damn stinger! You speak the truth about danger and confidence. One of the seniors does this very strange looking move on beam, everything akimbo as she flips head-over-heels and then lands back on the beam. But not this night. She took a brutal fall with just her foot smacking the beam as she misjudged it completely. Here's a photo of her going into the move, followed by one more I just saw while going through the 'keepers' again and thought was kinda different. As always, Tom, thanks for your comments and insights.
That photo of her on the beam where you said she took a pretty bad fall just looks awkward. I can't for the life of me figure out how her leg is positioned like that on the beam w/ her body at that angle. ?_?
Thanks, James, and sorry for the lack of Gator love. There's just no feasible way to shoot the visiting team without sacrificing my primary goal of delivering a well-rounded set (Utah athletes, crowd, arena, candids, etc.) to my client.
bcyip: Yeah. Her body couldn't figure it out either and paid a price in pain.
Wow, that shot in itself looks like she's already way out of shape. Nothing I've ever seen before, for sure- it must be one helluva move when she pulls it off. Hope she'll be fine, though.
The college sports world seems to be taking a beating this week, as two D1 baseball players in unrelated games each suffered serious neck injuries in head-first collisions with other players. Reports don't look good for two of the four involved. One for sure had surgery yesterday and will be in for spinal cord injury rehab later this week.
Tom: That's terrifying stuff, the kind of thing you just don't want to have to think about. Here's hoping those players are able to recover.
About that move on beam, no doubt it's got a name, but it's really ugly, so anti-graceful that it must have a high difficulty factor or I can't see the point of including it in a routine. Here are two photos from the side, from a different meet, to give an idea of how different it is from typical goal of maintaining form:
Russ,
stunning set of shots from start to finish. I always enjoy your gymnastics posts as the consistency in the excellence of your images has been top notch, and they just keep getting better.
