Looking at picking up a boom stand and I'm looking to purchase either an Avenger A5036cs with the D600 boom or the A4050cs, then add the wheels. Anyone have any first hand experience with either stand that can tell me some good/bad points??
I have an Avenger 5029 with this same boom and it works great. Though I don't have experience with the A5036cs, I think the low feet would be a significant advantage in terms of stability and the ease of loading up with sandbags when necessary. I got the 5029 because it has wheels, and I was tired of moving a C stand with this boom and a heavy monolight and 53-inch Octa with counterweights. The wheels make it so much easier. I can only guess that the rig you are considering would be even better. Not sure how it folds up, though.
I searched high and low for the perfect light stand and I too wound up getting the Avenger 5029. It was a good compromise for weight/sturdiness (14 lb stand + 8lb boom = 22 lbs). I also use it with the D600 boom.
The A5036cs goes up very high almost 12', do you need that much height specially being able to raise the boom up? It's also made from all steel so it's 30 lbs (38 lbs with the D600) which is very heavy if you plan to ever use it on location, but it'll definitely be more sturdy. The 5029's two riser columns are made of aluminum with a steel bottom column and legs. With a monohead + medium weight modifier, the thing will sway/wobble a little as you move it, but it's definitely sturdy enough. The A5036cs has a much wider footprint, pretty damn big, that is good for stability, but you will also need the room for it.
The 5036 also has a universal head which isn't as good as the simple spigot on the 5029. The Avenger rep told me the single spigot top of the 5029 will be more sturdy when mated to the D600 female receptor. The universal head's spigot is off to the side.
No leveling leg on the above stands though =(
The A4050 looks ok, although the total will be about $400 with the wheels. It'll be about 36-37 lbs probably with the wheels. Probably heavier than I'm willing to haul around to location. "When the 2 section boom is in use, its maximum length is 8.75'" Don't know if that will be high enough for you also..
