I still can't figure out how to keep the filter on my 400 and my 14-24 when I'm shooting on the beach....
I use a filter when I'm putting away the camera/lens in the bag. I always take them off when I'm on assignment/weddings. I don't like to use the front caps on my lenses. If needed, I can just shoot right away, and then take away the filter later. I've never needed it to protect against anything when shooting events. I've even dropped a lens, and the filters outer plastic was warped, but I just replaced the filter and everything was fine again. I don't worry too much about dust - I guess because I almost always shoot at f8 or larger aperture, so they never show up. Just me.

I use them all the time. I would rather clean a filter than a lens. When I buy used I will always prefer a lens that has been covered by a filter.
+1 then once I buy the used lens I take it off. Why buy the glass then put another sub glass in front of it?
If you want to really protect your lens, take a look at the Lens Guard by DeluxGear. You can see a video of a guy throwing a lens with Lens Guards on it on their facebook fan page.
