What this thread clearly discloses is that the 7D is capable of very good performance IF (and that's a big if) the photographer also knows how to properly process the image. Some of the shots look horrible and others are stunning. I don't chalk that up to camera variations - it's a result of properly exposed images when taken AND post-processing skills.
Exactly! What you said is all it boils down to.
I personally use any ISO speed required to get the shot. I try to keep it low, but the minute the shutter speed isn't cutting it, I prefer to deal with noise than camera shake.
Really don't care what some people consider acceptable; it seems people often forget Photography is about capturing images and not debating on what camera is cleaner than the other ... Don't get me wrong, I know gear is important in this hobby, but some people seem to think it's all that matters.
I moved from a XXXD body (a Rebel XS) to a 7D, and I thought "oh yeah, I love that the camera can go up to 3200 ISO (or 6400 - sort of) but it's not like pics could ever be usable at those high ISOs!!" but lo and behold... I was absolutely blown away by the low amount of noise and the noise that is there seems to be more of a fine grain than what I had experienced before - so it was much easier to get rid of. Along with LR3 I can shoot any ISO up to about 2000 and get usable results - which in my definition is: noise can be completely edited out without any detail in the shot being lost! Love my 7D!
However, I have never owned a 1D or 5D body and I have heard these bodies have even better results at high ISOs (which for the price I can't imagine it's not true)
Still 7D does the job - I love being able to shoot high ISOs with it and would recommend it all the way. If youre looking for a 1.6x crop - it's THE one.
