I have seen a few people interested in the 28 Summicron - I just started using this lens on the NEX, so I figured I'd show a few examples of why you'd pay $3000 for a lens. Aside from the painterly style (low-contrast), the real Leica magic tends to happen wide-open. I am not sure if the 28 R is like this, but here are two similar sets - the first one is stopped down a bit, the second is wide open. Minimal processing, so the color temp/vignetting are typical. Not the most imaginative comps, just figured this could/would be helpful. ...Show more →
thanks! things look about as i expected. any problems you think the lens has on the NEX other than price? have you played with it at all on the hawk's adapter? i'm curious how it performs close up and wide open.
corposant, those shots remind of the good times I have spent with my now ex-28 Cron I love Leica rendering, I really do. I think I will pause my Zeiss acquisitions and get a couple of Leicas to balance them.
Brian, super interesting shot! Very nice, sharp, perfect detail, perfect DoF.

Kahren, nice boat scene, nice colors from the Pen F. How do you like the lens overall?
I had a pen f 40/1.4 with the older nex3 before this, i think this 38/1.8 is just as good except a tad slower and a tad wider as their description would suggest. I got the 38/1.8 as a cheaper alternative to the 40/1.4 after i sold my original nex3 and the 40/1.4, i wanted to try m4/3 but it didn't quite work out so i went back to the nex. The 38/1.8 seems sharper wide open then the 40/1.4 was but maybe that is just the newer sensor in the nexc3, i almost want to get the 40/1.4 again to try them side by side. Overall i like the 38/1.8, i think its a good lens, sharp from wide open, short MFD which a lot of rangefinder lenses are missing, good throw on the focusing ring, small size and short adapter matches the small nex body well.
here is another sample from the 38/1.8 wide open, but with a nex5n

I don't have the Hawks adapter, so I can't say. The one thing that irks me about switching between my "FF" (film) and the NEX is how different DOF is. The 28 Cron at f/2 is challenging for me to focus (bear in mind, I have shot only maybe 300 frames on the NEX and the majority of them are with the ZM 18, where focusing is less difficult), so this may be just general system growing pains. Ergonomically it's good, just need to focus with your right hand. I haven't really issues with my corners.
I will post some more interesting shots later from both lenses - these were just quick comparisons to satiate my curiosity.

Thanks for the info. The 38/1.8 seems to be among the most readily available of the Pen F lenses. Does the 38 or 40 exhibit much CA when wide open (assuming shooting RAW or JPG without correction turned on)?
I like how you took something boring and made it beautiful. I usually don't like architecture shots but your post work and the comps make me like them.
Thanks! I have found myself ever more drawn to the details rather than the whole building.

sebboh - are the G series lenses as warm as the first shot?
the G lenses i've shot with all run a little red, particularly compared to my minoltas. in this case auto white balance maybe the major source of warmth though – a quick check reveals its value was 6150 and -9 in the mid afternoon sun.
