Can anyone share your experience with Nex-5n and Zeiss ZM35/2. How is close up performance, say for portraits? How does the lens compare to something like 35/2 Distagon ZE/ZF? Photos would be much appreciated. Thank you.
5N + Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 Version I. The lens is notable for its wide aperture but I find its stopped-down performance rather good. Here's a photo at f/8. Also including a link to the full-sized JPEG so you can see the photo at 100%

just found one a week ago and am crazy about it. Have only just noticed as you show, good performance stopped down. Besides its classic rendering wide open and frankly spectacular sharpness @1.2--not always evident till you look close, and it's wonderful OOF rendering, another thing I love about it is the DOF---more than any superspeed.
I've got plenty of lenses which are a nightmare to focus wide open---this one is so so sweet in that regard and your rate of keepers is much higher--also helped by the the wide FL--you can hold it steady easy. Jonmanjiro at RFF wrote the other day that he figured it out, and the DOF is almost exactly that of a 50/2 wide open. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6041/6349787164_3de95d913b_b.jpg
Funny thing is the lens is not widely known. Try to find a high profile review. Another thing is there are some horrible copies floating around--somebody here---really good shooter--had one--was it millsart? I think he also threw his nex in the garbage, hehe, but he had some great shots with it before that
V2 has closer focus, but of course we have hawks so it's not imporatant anymore. As you prolly know, there is a silver V1 which pulls an extra 500 because only 300 were made.
WIth the hood it looks like a pepsi can and weighs about the same as a full one--but I'm finding the hood is not needed as the lens--or my copy anyway--has great flare resistance--and its quite a beauty without it.
@ sebboh 2 more sweet ones. Love #1 and #2--usually i hate the statues, but that guy seems alive
re: 24/1.8 Well jeez it would be fantastic to have something so fast--with AF even, at that EFL. Maybe next spring I can sell some stuff and raise money for one
Today an early nikkor 105/2.5 arrived with "C" on barrel, so I can use it with my '58 IIIA. I had to give 280 for it, but it came with original case, very cool old caps---glass and barrel nearly mint. It's flaw--the blades draw oil. How the glass is so clear when it does this I don't know--perhaps an amature CLA with the wrong lube.
Seems even sharper than my other copy, which is in nikon S (rf) mount--nearly identical to the contax--you can use the wides--but 50 + and you cannot focus. Someday maybe I'll find an 85/2 "C"---then I will have all three of the great early nikkors--the ones the photogs loved the most and were used so much by LIFE. They are famous for hard hard glass and good coatings and spot on RF calibration.
The 35/1.2 is a sweet lens. From where I'm sitting it looks to have a good 'modern' sharpness, even wide open. If the thing was smaller and lighter I would be all over it... but I've never heard of a small, light f/1.2 lens
FWIW, I found the Canon 24L to have great DOF on crop frame wide open also. I know it's not alt but just wanted to mention it in the spirit of nice fast primes. I think it really sings on a crop body when having the widest possible perspective is not the first priority.

pen f 42/1.2 is awesomely small, doesn't have the modern look though.

....Any suggestions for ~ 35 fov that's fast enough for indoors....even a 28/2. ...
I've used the Rokkor 28/2 and c/y 28/2 and aside from a slight WB difference much to my surprise find them indistinguishable in contrast, bokeh and sharpness. I have a CV 28/1.9 on it's way to compare and would much prefer the smaller size of an RF lens. But like you I think I'd prefer a 24mm. I'll can check out the OM 24/2 soon as well and hope to get some comparative pics up.
Funny thing is when I got to this building (which I've photographed numerous times before), I also pulled out the M9 and within about 5 minutes I was only shooting with the M. It just felt a lot faster and more intuitive. If I end up getting a 5N (I'm borrowing this one), the EVF will be a must, I think, as I just find it too slow to shoot with off the display. And while traveling last week it was pretty much the same story. Maybe I'll wait for the 7 and some additional real-world results here before making a decision about the NEX...
It's a shame there's no way to get the auto zoom working with legacy.. unfortunately the peaking in az sun is pretty pointless.. I can be focused to 4 feet and it shows things in focus 30 ft away - limitation of contrast detection I would guess.

For those curious, this is also true for the Version II lens.

Any ideas on why I may be getting vignetting on only one side of this lens... CG 28/2.8 - at least from what I see it only looks like it's on the right side of the image.. sorry for boring shots.. walking around the 'hood to try and get used to the camera.
It's most likely the adapter, at the point where it mounts to the Contax. If it's not level/even then it can induce asymmetrical vignetting, along with other problems.
FWIW, a friend of mine did a test of the CV 50/1.5 vs. the ZM 50/1.5 on a NEX-5N, and the CV was sharper in the center, especially at wider apertures, but the ZM was sharper in the corners from either f2.8 or f4 (can't remember which.)

Re: auto zoom... If it was possible to switch focus assist from the lower back button to the top back, it would be a lot more usable for me.
I agree. Or center tapping LCD 1,2, out.
I think the vignetting was my hand position as its not in all shots but I'll double check the adaptor. Thanks!

You can tap the NEX-5N LCD to focus assist. Either way, I mapped the right directional button on the wheel to focus magnification, and that is easier to get to.
