dj, with the expodisc, do you point it directly to the lights to set the white balance?
Also, if I use the ice to set the WB, do I set +1 EV then do the WB or set the +1EV after I do the WB?
I can't speak for how others use the expodisc in a hockey setting, but as far as the expo disc usage is concerned, that's what your supposed to do...... Point at the light source to get your WB reading.
Perry... good stuff! Just want to go a little tighter now (or wait till the action's a little closer) to fill the frame a little more, although those action shots with several players can be effective too.
Telly... as Andy says I usually try and point it towards the light source, although because I like the ice to come off white I have used the ice before too and it seems to work ok.
Question for dj dunzie
1- when you have your camera on AV, is your f-stop 2.8 ?
2- do you shot through the glass for your image that you use for your custom WB?
I'll shoot at f2.8 if the light is brutally low, otherwise I just find f3.2 gives me just a hair more DOF for closer action which I like. With today's bodies being so good at high ISO shooting I'd rather go from ISO3200 to ISO6400 (etc) to gain more leeway and / or a better SS when needed. However when the light's low the light's low and f2.8 sure beats f3.2 in some cases when you need the SS. There's a limit to everything. All things equal though I shoot f3.2 a LOT.
Setting the WB I'll generally do where I plan to be shooting from, and I usually TRY to avoid shooting through glass for a lot of reasons if it's possible. It isn't always...

Thanks, dj. Haven't checked the forum lately. Yes I noticed the problem of lacking tighter compositions. With a fixed 200 mm it' s a little challenging but i'm trying to improve on that aspect.
