Love mine. I use it for soccer, lacrosse, football.. Pretty much anything that's a field sport. Paired with the 80-200 you'll have a good combo for sports.
I have taken both my 80-200mm 2.8 AF-D and 300mm 4.0 AF-S (with Kirk collar) to shoot football games from the sidelines. The focal length of the 80-200 works best for me. The AF on the 300 is a tad bit faster, but I haven't had a problem with out of focus shots with the 80-200.
I've had two of these lenses and, quite frankly, they were the most useless pieces of glass I've ever owned. Used both of them maybe once, then sold. Just don't like the 300mm fixed on DX or FX. But I don't shoot sports. Just seemed like too much weight to carry when I rarely needed it. It was always too long or too short. The lack of VR hurts, too, because not only was the lens heavy, it really required a tripod.
