did you cheat a little with some added equipment
Ohhh, I would gladly shoot the moon if someone loaned me their 800 and D1
No cheating here, I didn't use any equipment from my observatory….
Just a little astro processing magic …though not much!
Anyone out there want to loan Karl a 800 and a D1 I want to see a photo with this set-up
Now with cool weather setting in Karl, it wont be long before I start imaging in the observatory, I dusted off the spider webs a few weeks back. This week I tested out the equipment and all is okay. Now I just have to wait for the big moon to disappear.

For a second, I was wondering if this was a NSFW thread.
Here's my attempt with a cheap $150 500/6.3 reflex. Not quite up to the pro quality you guys posted, but not bad for such a cheap lens and someone who had only been shooting for a month.
Haven't given it a shot in a year now. My skills are better, both with the camera and in post, so I should have better luck next time. If this cloudy WA sky ever clears that is.
I don't use this lens much, and I'm sure you can see why. It's impossible to shoot it hand held. I have gotten some very sharp images from it, but they are few and far in between. Next stop is a 400/5.6 + 1.4TC for such shenanigans.
Tim, I keep coming back to your photograph. I can't believe you handheld the 500 and captured as sharp an image! I really like the background.
Arron nice shot with a $150 lens! Imaging at that distance seeing becomes a great factor in the sharpness of and image. As I was imaging the moon last night I could see the focus changing through the view finder. When it was sharp I clicked
Herb, great detail but it might be a bit over processed...but you could say with mine is as well
Hai, that Sigma looks pretty sharp. Is that the 5.6 prime?

Thank you. I had to focus using Live View. DOF on my reflex is pretty thin. It's almost impossible for me to focus through the viewfinder. Part of the reason I'm considering a Katzeye focusing screen.
I really like to MF sometimes, but it's just too damn hard without a proper focusing screen. Having to use Live View is a real pain sometimes too.
Hey Bruce, could you post a 100% crop towards the bottom of the moon. I'm interested in seeing how that combination looks. I know it won't be tack sharp, but I'm curious. And what TC's did you use?

nice shot, was that real or did you paste them together ?
I ask because both the plane and the moon seem to be sharp, at that distance though they might both fall under infinity focus

Hai nice pleasing image to look at.

Thanks Dale,
I like your shot too (sharp image) even though my color-blindness doesn't allow me to make a judgment on the coloration that you must have applied in post
