p.1 #1 · New Elinchrom Ranger heads have zooming bulb! (and other eli news)
I haven't seen this anywhere else, so I apologize if someone else posted this.
It appears there are redesigned heads for the ranger, and the flash tube can be zoomed in an out (presumably to mimic the advantages of the profoto zooming reflector/mount).
The only place I can find ANY news about new elinchrom stuff seems to be on Frank Doorhof's page, so I'll link to that. Check the video at the bottom, you can see the new head/feature at :22.
Also, full videos of (and samples taken with) the deep octa w/ gridset. I wonder what degree that grid is.

Looks very cool. The RX needs a refresh IMO, but sadly they already missed the chance to do more with their wireless control system. I'm sick of clicking and hoping my clicks are actually changing the power. Usually isn't good enough during a fast shoot. It's a real PITA.

You *do* know taht teh Pocketwizards FlexTT5, an AC3 and a PowerST4 can fix that? I feel your pain man that's why I did indeed go this route with mine. PLUS I get to use my Canon Speed lights for fill, rim and hair lighting.

I've heard from someone who should know that the new ranger packs will also no longer have the external Skyport connection, it will be all internal going forward.

Page 2-3 of this test (Bron Scoro vs Profoto 8A) shows the different 'zoom' effects of the systems used by Bron (moving tube) vs Profoto (moving reflector). How the new Eli head relates to either won't really know I guess until we see it...

So no more compatibility with PW's PowerST4...?
Also, no way to update the wireless controler when they one day listen to photographers and use tanscevers instead of receives, so we can see the power level/s from our trigger.
Sorry if I seem grumpy about this. The new zoomable heads and presumed RX Litho battery are awesome features. It's just a pity about the poor remote control.

Update-
I just noticed mention of an upcoming iPhone App for controling power on the Elinchrom site.
Nice idea- a picture of the controls displayed on your iPhone, and you press whatever you like. However, until they actually use TRANSCEVERS at the other end, we can't see if what we're pressing is actually doing anything. It's still just press and hope...
Combine with with the less than legendary signal performance of the iPhone, broadcasting on a frequency the antenna was not optimised for, and the hit-and-hope stuff would just continue. (Presuming the phone is being used directly, and not via a seperate, plugged in transmitter.)

Quotes from Frank Doorhof-
"Cathpah,
No new Ranger packs yet.
But I think it’s a matter of time when they will release something with skyports build in and options like the Quadra. But I really don’t know a time schedule. When it’s not released on Photokina it will probably not be soon."
"Elinchrom are always working on something, but for the MOMENT I did not hear a lot about new Rangers…. but that doesn’t mean they won’t be released within a year or so. But it could very well take longer.
I really don’t know."

Don't the higher-end flashes have transceivers already? After all, the number of exposures a particular Flash made can be seen on the PC screen, so there has to be some kind of communication in both ways.
Here is a link to a short video by Frank Doorhof with a demo of the iOS app for Elinchrom and a brief mention of a Gossen lightmeter with integrated RX control.
