What did you pay for the Sigma? I know I could research, but I was only wanting to know to see if it was in the price range of a used Nikkor 17-55, which would then be a possibility (although no VR, but with weather-sealing.)
i got mine for 597 and some change from abesofmaine. i found a 10% off coupon, a 10 dollar off coupon, a coupon for some lens cleaning kit (that i don't need), and there was a coupon for some sort of $100 restaurant.com giftcard of some sort.

Sigma HSM are always faster than Tamron, and Tamron 17-50 just in general is slow autofocus lens.
My "old fashioened" screw driver Tamron 17-50 is AFs fast, my 28-75 was that too. The BIM versions are slow.

Well, some disappointing news. The AF simply stops working once in a while, and the lens needs to be re-seated for it to work again. The lens hood was also so loose it would fall off sometimes. I'm returning it to Amazon, and haven't decided whether I will buy another or look for something else. I really hoped this would be my new every-day lens..
That is very disappointing, I was really hoping to replace my 18-55mm VR with this. I might still eventually take the gamble, but that sucks.
My older Sigma 18-50/2.8 focuses pretty well. Yeah it is a little soft at f/2.8, even in the center, but its not so terrible. At f/4 the lens is really sharp for almost the entire frame, but in low light f/4 is pretty much useless even at ISO3200. I don't find the lens has the best low light focus, especially with moving objects. Static stuff if fine, but I have used this lens at weddings and I have a lot of missed shots, even with flash which is strange. I have thought about selling it and picking up the 35/1.8, which would give me 12-24, 35, 50, 70-200 which is not a bad setup to have.
But I do like its versatility and one lens setup. Its nice to bring to a party or other social gatherings. I suppose the 35 could do that just as well with minor limitations, and probably be sharper. Oh the possibilities.

That's what I've heard, but I can't find any old ones.
I bought this lens couple days ago from online. It seems I was a bit unlucky got the bad copy of lens. The AF only worked from 17-30mm but above 35mm the AF didn't work and I had to turn to manual focus. Image quality is sharp at center but very soft at corner.
