Cool, thanks for the response. I'll hold out for the rokkor then. Bonus next month! by the way, the 55 FL does have a kit on eBay if anyone cares. Not cheap though.
Best to get one that's not been converted then? Will I be disappointed compared to my Zeiss 35f2 or Canon 50mm 1.4?
the canon FL 55/1.2 by itself is quite cheap though, so i think you would still save money over the rokkor. both should be better than the canon EF 50/1.4 in most respects (not flare suppression). the zeiss should be much more contrasty than the rokkor and sharper while only a fair bit more contrasty then the FL and probably not sharper (but i don't know about how they would compare on the edges).
R. Young - if you get a 58/1.2 please DO NOT file down the rear element that would almost certainly destroy it. You can file the rear retainer, it can be removed, that's a personal choice. I'd try using it for a while without doing so first, as you may find (like many) that as a closeup lens it's fine not going right out towards infinity.
yes, please do not destroy it 58mm-rokkors are so nice ...
i did remove the complete rear-lens (block), cause i could not remove the nut alone. filing did cost a few evenings (very slowly very carefully), but finally i could do it without any scratch
I'm not bothered by infinity shots with this lens, and I'd really rather not bother filing anything. If the mirror does accidentally hang would it damage my camera or the lens?

Always better to avoid it, but it's very rare to get actual damage to the mirror (esp. when the mirror merely hangs when coming back down).
I have the Ec-s, but its odd..I have no issues with my Zeiss 1.4 glass...maybe 1.2 is just too tough! Lord this bokeh is amazing, cant wait to use for portraits.
There can be different issues that can caus your missfocus problems, remember DOF is very small @1.2,
one is that the diopter setting is not where it should be, if you have good eyes, it should be zeroed out,
another is that the focus screen may be installed wrong, or it needs to be shimed with different thickness washer(s),
and finally some lenses seem to pop into focus better than others, which can help in judging where your point of focus is.
You can try setting it up on a tripod and compairing live view and viewfinder focusing to help find out how far out you are.
I have awful vision and wear corrective lenses (-7.25) in both eyes. I know i have the diopter set at - so to make it clearer; I'm pretty sure its because its 1.2 b/c I have no issues with my zeiss glass at 1.4
Bracket your focus, as you use it more, you'll get a good idea where the focus point is, I tend to back focus my shots, I don't know if it's because my eyes work harder to bring things into focus or what, so I now focus just in front of what I'm shooting at. have fun.
